Inaugural Tanakpur Orienteering Championship – A Thrilling Success

Tanakpur, Uttarakhand, October 6, 2024 – The Dhyan Chand Foundation, in collaboration with its newly established Tanakpur Orienteering Club, successfully organized the inaugural Tanakpur Orienteering Championship today at Sal Vani, near Tanakpur Railway Station. This event marked a significant milestone as the first-ever orienteering competition in Tanakpur and only the second in the state of Uttarakhand.

A total of 65 participants from various age groups took part in this exciting and mentally stimulating sport, which challenges participants to navigate their way using maps to specific checkpoints within the shortest possible time. The sport demands both physical stamina and sharp decision-making skills.

In the Girls’ category, Mehak emerged victorious, completing the 1.5 km wooded course in an impressive time of 7:25 minutes. In the Boys’ category, Umesh Pandey secured first place with a time of 7:35 minutes. Gunjan Sakaria topped the Women’s category, while Arun triumphed in the Under-15 category.

The atmosphere was electric as participants celebrated their achievements, eager for the next orienteering challenge in the region. The sport’s unique combination of adventure and strategy proved to be a hit, leaving competitors thrilled and already looking forward to future events.

Shri Gaurav Dhyanchand, President of the Dhyan Chand Foundation, graced the event alongside Tanakpur Orienteering Club’s President, Smt. Deepa Devi, and General Secretary, Shri Babu Lal Yadav. All participants were awarded certificates for their participation and achievements.

The Dhyan Chand Foundation, in collaboration with the International Orienteering Federation and Park World Tour Sweden, is committed to expanding orienteering in India. With the successful launch of the Tanakpur Orienteering Club, the Foundation looks forward to hosting more events in the scenic landscape of Tanakpur, bringing this exciting sport to new heights.
